Currently, Chromium is maintained by The Chromium Project, a community that consists of Google developers and volunteers. Chromium is the open source version of Google Chrome, also initiated by Google. The good news is, those who want to learn more about this browser can switch to its twin brother, Chromium. It’s not an open source software since Google doesn’t release the source code of the browser. While you can use it for free, Google Chrome is basically an proprietary software. It’s the most popular and the most widely-used web browser. 2. ChromiumĮveryone knows where is the current position of Google Chrome. Firefox is released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. From Windows, macOS, Linux, Android to iOS. Currently, Firefox is available for nearly all platforms from desktop to mobile. As of today, there have been about 91 languages that are supported by Firefox. As a popular web browser, Firefox has been translated into many languages. The Firefox web browser was firstly released in 2002.Īs I mentioned, Firefox is built using the Gecko engine. This browser was written in several programming languages including C, Rust, C++, JavaScript and HTML. Firefox itself is a flagship product of Mozilla, a leading free software community that has been around since 1998. Before the emergence of Google Chrome, Firefox is the most-used modern web browser along with Internet Explorer. Firefox is the most popular open source web browser. If you curious about which are the popular web browsers that listed as the open source software, here is the list. Firefox, the most popular open source web browser, is built using Gecko while Google Chrome is built using Blink. Gecko and Blink are the popular engines of web browser. Generally, most web browsers available today are built using either Gecko or Blink. Commonly, an open source software is released under a certain license that comply with the Open Source Definition. In fact, there are some web browsers that are built based on Firefox. Firefox, on the other hand, is an open source and free software since all people can use it for free and they also has the ability to see the source code of the browser. But, the two are not open source software since the developers don’t offer their source code to be learnt by other parties. In the context of web browser, Google Chrome and Opera are two examples of free software. And conversely, not all free software are open source. First, an open source software is’t always free. There is one thing you need to note when discussing about open source software. This browser becomes so popular because it’s released as a cross-platform software so more people can use it. SeaMonkey and Palemoon are probably the best for close to handling the modern web.Firefox is by far the most popular open source web browser. They all work in 32-bit and have varying degrees of usefulness. I have also used links2, Midori (both in Q4OS repo), Netsurf, and otter-browser (both not in Q4OS repos). You will need to work at changing the configuration to make it work best in 32-bit, especially with low memory. But it also is an old version.įirefox-ESR will probably work but it is pretty memory hungry. Palemoon-nonsse is supported here with a special install routine. The last SeaMonkey I can use on non-SSE2 machines is version 2.49.4. But depending on your 32-bit system you may not be able to use anything that requires SSE2. SeaMonkey can be downloaded and placed in any folder of your choice, it does not require an "installation". SlimJet can be downloaded and installed from a deb file. Only FF-ESR and Palemoon-nonsse are in the Q4OS repos. For 32-bit I have had success with using Firefox-ESR, Palemoon-nonsse, SlimJet, and SeaMonkey. ![]()
